Chechnya's literary community entered a new institutional chapter at a general meeting in Grozny on 3 October. The gathering of 105 union members elected Buvaysar Shamsudinov as chairman, placing a figure with long experience across Chechen-language publishing and literature at the head of the organisation.

At a glance

  • The general meeting took place in Grozny on 3 October.
  • The meeting brought together 105 union members.
  • Shamsudinov is also editor-in-chief of the Chechen-language newspaper Daymohk.

The decision at the general meeting

According to the institutional report, members unanimously supported Shamsudinov's candidacy. The published record confirms the result and attendance, but it does not yet set out a detailed programme for the new leadership. Future announcements will therefore show how the change affects literary events, publishing and work with emerging writers.

From newspaper publishing to a literary institution

Shamsudinov serves as editor-in-chief of Daymohk, a newspaper published in Chechen, a role confirmed by the paper's own staff page. His literary work spans poetry, prose and compilation. The presentation of two new books at the National Library of the Chechen Republic in June also points to an active contemporary output.

Why this matters for Chechen-language culture

The strongest feature of the appointment is the bridge it creates between a writers' organisation and periodical publishing in the native language. Shamsudinov's poetry and stories have also appeared in Russian and in languages of neighbouring peoples, adding a further link for literary circulation. It is nevertheless too early to judge outcomes before the union publishes concrete plans for books, translations and programmes.
