Choosing the stops
Nikhaloy, Ushkaloy and Itum-Kali offer different experiences within one gorge trip. Give Nikhaloy the walking time, Ushkaloy an architectural and landscape stop, and Itum-Kali time for the settlement and museum. Discuss priorities before departure: a stair-based walk and a day of brief stops suit different travellers. Rather than filling the map with pins, choose two places you most want to see and leave the remaining time for pauses along the road.
Looking at the Ushkaloy towers
The twin towers at Ushkaloy are striking partly because of their position between rock and river. Including the surrounding cliff and water in a photograph conveys that relationship better than a close-up alone. Agree a suitable stopping place and pedestrian approach with your driver before getting out. Entering a tower or climbing its masonry is not an essential part of the visit. Leave a little time simply to take in the wider setting.
Leave time for Itum-Kali and Phakoch
Phakoch near Itum-Kali adds an architectural visit to a landscape-led day. Allow time to walk through the accessible parts and visit the museum rather than stopping only for a photograph at the entrance. Ask which areas are open and confirm the museum's hours before travelling. If you arrive late, choose the visit that matters most instead of trying to fit towers, waterfalls and museum into the remaining daylight. Moving a stop to another day can make the journey more rewarding.
Planning a day from Grozny
For a morning departure, agree the furthest stop and return time with the driver first, then fit walking, lunch and photographs around them. Our suggested approach is to give Nikhaloy more time if walking is the priority, or favour Ushkaloy and Phakoch if architecture matters most. The two options do not need an identical timetable. When booking, ask whether the price is per vehicle or per person, how waiting time is handled and whether admission tickets are included.
What to carry
A small backpack with water, a simple meal, a rain layer and a spare top makes the stops easier to manage. Choose footwear for uneven ground as well as the waterfall walk. Save the accommodation address, driver's number and return meeting point on your phone for offline use. Decide in advance which stop you can drop if rain changes the day. Keep some room for rest instead of repeatedly postponing the return just to reach one more place.
