Functions of the towers
Broad residential towers served household and storage functions, while slimmer defence towers supported observation and refuge. They should be read with terraces, paths, water, burial grounds and farmland rather than as isolated monuments.
Tsoi-Pede and necropolises
Tsoi-Pede, with towers and numerous funerary structures, is among the best-known archaeological landscapes of highland Chechnya and appears in the UNESCO Tentative List context. Its sensitivity, sacred character and access conditions require current permission and guide information.
Conservation and visitor ethics
Do not climb masonry, remove stones, enter funerary structures or use drones without permission. The ability to take a photograph does not make every image culturally appropriate; follow local guidance.
Engineering in stone
The towers are compelling for more than their silhouettes. Local stone, walls tapering upwards, floor-beam systems and foundations fitted to steep ground reveal centuries of mountain engineering. Begin with the distant profile, then look closely at corner stones, openings and the relationship between water, path and settlement.
Building an Argun Valley route
The Ushkaloy twin towers, the Nikhaloy area, Itum-Kali and heritage sites farther south form stops on one long valley journey. Do not overload the day because distances look short on a map: mountain roads, photography stops and checkpoints add time. Reconfirm guide, permissions, road and weather on the same morning.
