Season, equipment and risk
Rain can make rock slippery and rapidly alter flow and roads. Carry grippy footwear, layers, offline maps, water and a local communication plan. Do not cross barriers or take risks for photographs near canyon edges or water.

How to build a realistic gorge day
Departure from Grozny, mountain-road photo pauses, the Ushkaloy towers, a waterfall walk and Itum-Kali may fit into one day, but completing every stop cannot be guaranteed. Start with two priorities and one conditional final stop. Shorten the walk when surfaces are wet or visibility falls, and set a daylight limit for the return. The driver should choose where it is safe to leave the vehicle, and visitors should never enter private or closed ground simply for a view.
