Plan Dombay and Arkhyz as two bases
Give the first two or three nights to the Dombay–Teberda cluster: one day for the village and easy viewpoints, another for one officially open trail. Then move to Arkhyz for two nights, using one day for the valleys and another for Lower Arkhyz plus the observatory programme. Do not make the observatory the day's anchor until the booking is confirmed. Cherkessk can be an arrival or departure stop; avoid changing base every day.
Choosing a national-park trail
Teberda National Park does not operate every route under the same conditions. Baduk Lakes, Shumka, Alibek, Dombay-Ulgen and Tumanly-Kel differ in duration, terrain and permits, with some entering the border zone. Choose only a route officially declared open and compare checkpoint advice with the digital notice. A commercial tour listing does not prove park authorisation. Do not plan multi-day crossings unless current park rules explicitly allow them.
Reading nature, archaeology and science together
Karachay-Cherkessia's route is stronger than mountain scenery alone. The churches and settlement traces at Lower Arkhyz reveal the valley's material history, while SAO and RATAN-600 show contemporary science in the same landscape. Confirm visiting times and do not present the two telescope sites as one place. Respect worship and conservation rules at monuments and research operations at the observatory. For an evening sky programme, confirm weather, light and registration directly.
Season, equipment and access
Dombay and Arkhyz can feel different in rain, mist and temperature on the same date. Carry grippy footwear, a light rain layer, water and an offline map rather than relying on city shoes. On lake walks, do not estimate time by distance alone; elevation, roots and stones change pace. If a trail closes, do not pass the barrier—switch to a lower museum or village plan. Check fees, cableway operation and permits from official sources on the day.
