A first week based in Yerevan
Give Yerevan two full days. Build separate days for Garni–Geghard, Echmiadzin–Zvartnots and Sevan; an overnight in Dilijan keeps the lake day unhurried. Leaving day seven as a city, market or museum buffer adds resilience. Gyumri and Lori are a northern extension that turns the week into nine or ten days, not an extra dash.
More than a monastery checklist
At Geghard, the rock-cut spaces belong to the Upper Azat landscape; Echmiadzin pairs living worship with archaeology; Lori links monasteries to valley settlement. Seeing only façades loses the context. Keep quiet, limit movement during services and ask about tripods or professional photography. UNESCO status does not mean every building follows the same visitor regime.
Altitude, sun and distance
Sevan and mountain crossings can be colder and windier than Yerevan, while strong sun masks the chill. Short map distances lengthen on two-lane roads with stops. Water, sun protection and light layers are basic equipment outside the city. In winter and shoulder seasons, verify road and site opening separately.
Current access boundary
This guide is limited to Yerevan, central and northern routes. The eastern border belt and south-eastern roads under current official warnings are excluded. Cultural importance does not prove that the approach road is suitable on a given day. Recheck entry rules for your nationality, the operator, road status and local notices before travel.
