A seven-day flow from Baku to the mountains
Two days in Baku, one in Gobustan, one on Absheron and three along Shamakhi–Lahij–Shaki form a coherent first journey. Keep the second night in Shaki so its palace and historic centre escape tour-bus pace. Guba–Khinalig or Lankaran–Hyrcanian forests are separate two-day extensions; adding both fragments a single week.
Read the heritage in layers
Baku layers a medieval walled core, oil-era architecture and a contemporary waterfront skyline. Gobustan opens a far longer timeline; Shaki shifts the scale to palace, caravan routes and craft. Rather than seeking one national style, compare material, trade, climate and use. Do not treat a museum label and a popular anecdote as equivalent evidence.
Food and craft
Baku's table is not identical to the north-west or mountain villages. Pastry in Shaki, copper work in Lahij and seasonal produce in rural stops alter the story. Ask before photographing or entering a workshop. Test ‘handmade’ claims by asking about material, maker and place of production, and check current customs rules before buying anything presented as antique.

E-visa, flights, land borders and regional access can change independently in Azerbaijan. An evergreen guide therefore does not promise that a crossing is open or a remote mountain road suits every vehicle.
