A 17.4-kilometre upgrade is reshaping the road to Veduchi

Major works are complete on the R-217 approach through the Argun Valley, with the upgraded section due to enter service by the end of 2026.

An upgraded mountain road winding through the Argun Valley towards Veduchi

One of the most important mountain sections on the journey from Grozny to Veduchi is being upgraded. Earthworks, drainage and retaining structures are largely complete along 17.4 kilometres of the R-217 Kavkaz approach, between kilometres 42 and 59. Lighting, stops, pavements, signs and safety barriers are now being installed. The section is expected to enter service by the end of 2026; until work finishes, travellers should check road conditions and temporary traffic arrangements on the day of travel.

At a glance

  • The upgrade covers 17.4 km of the mountainous R-217 approach, between kilometres 42 and 59.
  • Main roadworks are complete; lighting, stops, pavements, signs and barriers are being installed.
  • Opening is targeted for the end of 2026; until then, confirm current road conditions on the day of travel.

What is changing on the Veduchi road?

The upgraded section runs between the slopes of Mount Daneduk and the Argun river valley. The project strengthens the road structure, improves drainage and adds more than 130 metres of retaining structures. In terrain exposed to seismic activity and landslide risk, these works are intended to improve resilience as well as driving comfort.

What it means for travellers

This road is not only the approach to Veduchi; it also forms the backbone of journeys towards Shatoy and Itum-Kali, their historic towers, valleys and walking routes. Access should become more predictable once lighting, stops and protective equipment are complete. An upgraded road is not a risk-free one, however: fog, snow, rockfall and temporary works can still alter plans.

How to plan the journey

Check the same-day forecast and road notices before leaving Grozny, and allow enough time to return before dark. Winter tyres, sufficient fuel, an offline map and a power bank should be treated as basic mountain-route preparation. Until the works are complete, build flexibility into the journey rather than relying on a fixed travel time.
